HELP US BUILD SUPPORT

Families for Peace Corps is an independent project of the MorePeaceCorps campaign to harness support from family members of Peace Corps volunteers to build a bigger, better, bolder Peace Corps – one that is doubled in budget by 2011, the 50th anniversary of the founding of Peace Corps.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

After signing up, continue on to the MorePeaceCorps website to take action and grow support for the Peace Corps Expansion Act 2009 (HR 1066) which calls for $450, $600, and $750 million to Peace Corps in FY 2010, 2011, and 2012.

FAST FACTS

  • Today, we send under 4,000 volunteers into the Peace Corps; this is half the number in the June of 1966;
  • At least 20 countries are asking for Peace Corps programs but with a shoestring $340 million per year, the Peace Corps cannot respond;
  • There were over 13,000 applicants to the Peace Corps in 2008 - 16% increase over 2007.
  • President Obama’s website pledges to place 16,000 volunteers in the field by 2011 but in 2009, Peace Corps will actually downsize by 500 volunteer positions, sending roughly 3,500 volunteers to the field;
  • There is powerful legislation in the House of Representatives called the Peace Corps Expansion Act 2009 that we must pass to get the Peace Corps the resources it merits. That’s where you come in!
